Will any old tennis or running shoes work on the pickleball court? Pickleball is a sport with constant lateral motion and quick direction changes, so having shoes explicitly built for pickleball is essential. We’ve broken down eight of the best women’s pickleball shoes.
Five pair of women's pickleball shoes

Looking for the perfect women’s pickleball shoe? The proper footwear can make a huge difference in your comfort, performance, and safety. For example, the courts where we play can get sandy sometimes, and pickleball players wearing running shoes tend to slip quite often. Because of this, I see more sprained ankles and other injuries.

If you’re in the market for pickleball shoes, it’s important to consider features such as non-skid, non-marking soles, good arch support, and breathable mesh for ventilation. Our team of experts has identified the best pickleball shoes with these advantages and offer more.

3 Tips For Choosing The Right Women's Pickleball Shoes

The Right Fit Matters

Getting the right fit is essential no matter what kind of shoe you’re looking for. Check out reviews from people who have purchased similar models before. These can give you a rough idea of how true-to-size the product runs. To help you out, we have included links to Amazon reviews in all our women’s pickleball shoe descriptions below.

Choose Comfort Over Style

It can be tempting to go with looks over comfort when browsing through pickleball shoes, but trust us – this usually isn’t the best move. You’ll be spending hours on your feet playing pickleball, so opting for a shoe that won’t cause discomfort mid-match is vital.

With this in mind, you could look for cushioning around the heel and arch area and breathable uppers. For instance, lightweight materials like mesh or faux leather are a good bet. Depending on your personal preference, different levels of cushioning can make all the difference.

Go With Quality Over Price

Who doesn’t like to save a few bucks? Looking for a value option is a great idea; there are great shoes at every price point. However, quality should always trump price when it comes to pickleball shoes.

Investing in good shoes means less wear and tear over time. This will ultimately save you money in the long run. Higher-quality materials provide better grip and stability on court surfaces, ensuring greater control over your movements.

Finally, quality shoes will help reduce the risk of injury and long-term foot problems.

FAQs: Women's Pickleball Shoes

Are Women's Pickleball Shoes Different From Men’s?

Pickleball shoes designed for women have a different construction than men’s pickleball shoes. Women’s shoes are usually lighter in weight with a lower center of gravity, which helps players maintain balance and stability on the court. They also have a narrower fit and deeper tread depths, providing better traction while playing. However, there are plenty of women’s pickleball shoe options for various feet types and needs.

What Type Of Shoes Are Best For Pickleball?

The answer is it depends on your feet. However, there are a few universal things to consider.

The best pickleball shoes should have support on the sides. This is because the majority of your movements in pickleball are lateral (side-to-side). Wearing running, gym, and basketball shoes for pickleball is not a good idea and could lead to injury.

Shoes designed for pickleball will also typically have a low-profile rubber sole, which provides excellent grip on the court surface and allows players to move quickly and change direction easily.

They also tend to be lightweight but provide support and cushioning for long hours of play.

Additionally, many pickleball shoes feature mesh paneling or breathable synthetic materials, which help keep feet cool and comfortable during intense matches.

Pickleball shoes should have cushion, control, traction, and stability.

Do You Need Special Shoes For Pickleball?

Yes, you should invest in pickleball shoes if you plan on playing regularly. Even if you only play occasionally, you might want to invest in a solid pair of pickleball or court shoes. This will ensure you stay safe and comfortable during your matches.

It will also allow you to become a better player!

How do Indoor and Outdoor Pickleball Shoes Differ?

Indoor and outdoor pickleball shoes are purpose-built to cater to the distinct demands of each playing environment. Indoor shoes prioritize features like gum rubber soles for optimal traction on smooth surfaces, offering excellent grip for quick lateral movements essential in indoor courts. They often focus on lightweight construction and enhanced flexibility to facilitate swift changes in direction.

In contrast, outdoor pickleball shoes emphasize durability, employing tougher outsoles to withstand rougher terrains like asphalt or concrete. They often incorporate thicker treads or patterns for improved traction on varied outdoor surfaces. Here are some key differentiators between indoor and outdoor pickleball shoes:

Indoor Pickleball Shoes:

• Do not mark up the hardwood/synthetic court surfaces
• Have flat-soles
• Have little to no tread
• Are designed to enhance footwork on slick surfaces

Outdoor Pickleball Shoes

• Have a denser/thicker sole
• Have deep tread patterns
• Are designed for increased grip
• Are typically made from water-resistant materials

Can You Wear Running Shoes For Pickleball?

It is essential to wear the right shoes for pickleball. Running shoes are unsuitable as they are designed for forward movement only, while pickleball involves a lot of quick side-to-side movements. Shoes with a flexible sole that can quickly respond to turns and stops on the court are best.

Rubber outsoles are also preferred as they provide better traction and grip. Basketball or volleyball shoes are not recommended for pickleball.

In the past few months, I have noticed an increase in beginner pickleball players slipping and getting injured while wearing running shoes. Don’t become the next statistic!

Is There A Difference Between Pickleball Shoes And Tennis Shoes?

The most concise answer we can provide is “It depends”.

There is definitely a difference when it comes to indoor vs. outdoor shoes. For indoor play, you will definitely want a shoe designed specifically for indoor courts.

For outdoor play, there is some overlap between pickleball and tennis shoes. However, there is increased side-to-side movement in pickleball compared with tennis. For that reason, you may want to look for a shoe specifically designed for pickleball.

According to Tyrol, one of the leading makers and suppliers of pickleball shoes in America, pickleball and tennis shoes are designed for court play and are suitable for both sports.

However, Tyrol pickleball shoes specifically:

  • Added toe box width and height to prevent common pickleball injuries of bruised toes.
  • Have added depth to make room for custom orthotics.
  • Have a stable playing platform that provides traction and torsional support to prevent rolled ankles (standard with the quick side-to-side pickleball movement).

What Shoes Do Pro Pickleball Players Wear?

The shoes worn by professional pickleball players are likely determined by their sponsors. For example, Skechers sponsors Major League Pickleball, so several players wear the Viper Court Pickleball Shoes.

Several pro pickleball players were previously tennis players and might already have tried and true court shoes that they still wear for their new sport. As pickleball grows, we’ll see campaigns with pro players wearing pickleball shoes from brands like Nike, Adidas, and Wilson.

Are You Ready To Elevate Your Pickleball Game?

If you’re on the hunt for pickleball shoes, keep comfort and quality at the top of your list. Check for features like cushioning, breathability, and arch support. I wish you all the best in finding your perfect pair!
